Alliance4Life

About project

Alliance4Life was founded as an EU-funded project under the title Alliance4Life to enhance institutional governance and research management in nine EU-13 countries. Through benchmarking and best practice exchange, partners identified key areas for improvement and collaborated in thematic working groups. Over time, it has evolved into a long-term initiative advancing research and innovation excellence in Central and Eastern Europe, strengthening institutional capacity and regional competitiveness.

Mission

The project aims to establish a European Alliance of ten progressive research institutions from nine less performing countries, working together to bridge the EU divide in health research and innovation (R&I). Building on prior initiatives such as DanuBalt and RegHealth-RI, the Alliance serves as a remedial action to address key barriers and enabling factors in health R&I. Through collaboration, the consortium seeks to strengthen institutional capacities and foster sustainable improvements in research performance.

Objectives

  • Closing the EU Gap in Health Research & Innovation
    • We empower research institutions in less performing regions by leveraging synergies between ESIF and the Framework Programmes to elevate scientific performance. By identifying key success factors—such as institutional culture and managerial best practices—we support emerging centers of excellence. Our national training platforms, best-practice "toolbox," and shared know-how help institutions adopt international standards while building on local success stories.
  • Strengthening the Profile & Reputation of Alliance4Life
    • Alliance4Life stands for excellence, independence, and international collaboration. We actively seek partnerships to tackle pressing societal challenges and foster environments where scientific talent thrives. By improving research conditions and becoming a preferred partner in EU-funded consortia, we enhance our standing within the European and global research community. Our goal is to contribute meaningfully to European research policies while maximizing the potential of cutting-edge infrastructure built with ESIF investments.
  • Driving Leadership in Science, Governance, Education & Innovation
    • We attract and nurture top talent, supporting high-impact, hypothesis-driven research through internal assessments and competitive funding strategies. Our institutions adopt best practices in training, education, and postdoctoral programs to bring in outstanding researchers. By fostering translational research, intellectual property protection, and knowledge transfer, we strengthen innovation ecosystems and serve as a model for other research institutions.
  • Engaging with Society & the Research Community
    • We prioritize openness and collaboration, increasing Alliance4Life’s visibility through scientific events, industry partnerships, and active engagement on social and traditional media. Our commitment extends beyond academia—through science communication, open science initiatives, and ethical discussions, we engage with regional and national communities to promote responsible research
  • Creating an Attractive & Inclusive Research Environment
    • We are committed to fostering fair, transparent, and supportive working conditions for researchers at all career stages. Our institutions share best practices in HR policies, career planning, and work-life balance, ensuring a welcoming environment for international researchers. By providing orientation packages for PhD students, enhancing access to funding opportunities, and adopting English as the working language, we make our institutions more accessible and globally competitive.

Impact

The project will drive institutional reforms in research management and enhance participation in international research consortia. It will develop strategies to optimize synergies between ESIF and H2020 funding, coordinated with national health R&I authorities. Local stakeholders will be engaged through national roundtables on institutional and research policy reforms, while the project's impact will be amplified through training modules and large-scale dissemination of results, ensuring long-term benefits for the research community.
