During the state visit of Czech President Petr Pavel to Tartu, the University of Tartu and Masaryk University signed a cooperation agreement that creates new opportunities for expanding research and academic collaboration between the two institutions. At the same time, the visit highlighted the long-standing partnership between the universities, whose achievements have gained international recognition.

On 28 May, Czech President Petr Pavel and his wife Eva Pavlová visited the University of Tartu. The delegation also included the Rector of Masaryk University, Martin Bareš, and the Czech Ambassador to Estonia, Zdeněk Beránek. The guests were accompanied by President of the Republic of Estonia Alar Karis and Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser.

In the university's senate hall, the University of Tartu and Masaryk University signed a cooperation agreement reaffirming their existing partnership and setting the goal of expanding student exchange, joint projects and academic contacts.

Alliance4Life as one of the success stories of cooperation between the two universities

Although the agreement opens new opportunities for collaboration, the partnership between the two universities extends back many years. One of the most notable examples highlighted during the visit was Alliance4Life, an initiative in which the University of Tartu and Masaryk University have participated since 2018.

Funded by the European Union, Alliance4Life brings together leading life science institutions from Central and Eastern Europe with the aim of strengthening research quality, international competitiveness and research management.

“I am pleased to see the collaboration between the University of Tartu and Masaryk University continue to grow, having been involved in it myself for more than ten years. One of the most significant outcomes of this partnership is Alliance4Life, a consortium of leading life science institutions in Central and Eastern Europe that has helped strengthen cooperation between researchers and research management professionals. During the visit, both rectors highlighted the importance of such long-term collaboration.”

Within the framework of Alliance4Life, partner institutions have exchanged best practices in research management, support for early-career researchers and the leadership of international research projects. The initiative is widely regarded as an example of how scientific institutions in the region can increase their impact within the European Research Area through joint efforts.

Masaryk University honored Toomas Asser during the state visit

During the visit, Masaryk University Rector Martin Bareš recognized the University of Tartu's contribution to the partnership by presenting Rector Toomas Asser with the Masaryk University Gold Medal. The award was given in recognition of the long-standing cooperation between the universities and Asser's commitment to advancing education and research.

Following the signing ceremony, the Czech presidential couple and the delegation met Czech citizens studying and working at the University of Tartu.

The state visit of the Czech President reaffirmed the strong ties between Estonia and the Czech Republic and highlighted the role of international research cooperation in the development of European universities. The new cooperation agreement between the University of Tartu and Masaryk University provides a foundation for continuing successful joint initiatives and expanding collaboration into new areas in the future.
